Santa Fe New Music ends 2009-2010 season with “The Music of Lewis Spratlan”

Santa Fe New Music concludes its 2009-2010 season with its seventh annual “Living Composer Portrait” collaboration with the Santa Fe Opera. The chamber music of composer Lewis Spratlan will be featured on Friday, June 25 in Albuquerque, and Saturday June 26, in Santa Fe.
Spratlan’s opera Life is a Dream will premiere at the Santa Fe Opera in July. The concert version of this piece won the composer the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in music. Spratlan is praised for the high dramatic impact and brilliant scoring of his music. SFNM’s concert will feature three of the composer’s most compelling recent works with leading guest artists, including a rapturous song cycle on Finnish poems, which features Spratlan’s fluid vocal writing.

Leading soprano Kiera Duffy will make her New Mexico debut, under SFNM’s Artistic Director, fresh off his appearances at Spoleto Festival USA, where he conducted the American Premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s new opera Proserpina. Pianist Judith Gordon, familiar to New Mexico audiences through SFNM as well as the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, is a colleague if Spratlan’s in Amherst, Massachusetts, and will be featured throughout the program as soloist and chamber artist.
SFNM’s Artistic Director John Kennedy notes that audiences look forward to this event, which closes SFNM’s season while anticipating the summer season at the Santa Fe Opera. “We find that this collaborative programming brings new audiences to both organizations, and gives Opera audiences a chance to anticipate the voice of a major composer as it spans genres from chamber music to opera.
